Course Offerings

In the subsidiary course of Romance Studies, you will be trained in French or Spanish and acquire basic knowledge of another Romance language.

The course of study comprises the following four areas:

Literary Studies

  • In the field of literary studies, you will study Romance literature with a view to important cultural, political and socio-economic contexts.

Linguistics

  • In linguistics, you will learn the structures and functions of Romance languages.

Language practice

  • In the language practice section you will consolidate the written and oral use of the language.

Culture and regional studies

  • In Cultural and Regional Studies you will acquire knowledge of geographical, historical, political, social, economic and cultural issues concerning France or Spain and the francophone or hispanophone countries.

Job & Career Perspectives

Our graduates are active in these professional fields:

  • teaching French at primary, secondary and vocational schools (provided that a Master's degree related to teaching profession has been completed),
  • in intercultural communication,
  • in foreign language teaching,
  • in translation activities,
  • in public relations,
  • in publishing and media companies,
  • in tourism.

Romance Studies in Detail

Structure of the study programme

The bachelor's degree course at the University of Erfurt comprises a major and a minor subject (two-subject bachelor's degree) as well as the fundamental course of study. It aims to impart specialist content and occupational field orientation as well as interdisciplinary skills. The standard period of study is six semesters.

In the first semester, students choose one of the two specializations: French or Spanish. Students who wish to study to become teachers must choose French.

  • Basics of the romanic cultures
  • Basics of Romance literary studies
  • Basics of Romance linguistics
  • Lengua y cultura or Langue et culture

Qualification Phase (Second/Third Year)

  • Language system and use of language
  • Theory and history of Romance literatures
  • Lengua, cultura y civilización or Langue, culture et civilisation

Two-Subject-Bachelor

The major and minor subjects differ in terms of the content and scope of the course. In the major subject a Bachelor thesis is written.

Combination rule:

  • Romance studies can be combined with all fields of study except Literary studies.

A study stay of at least three months in a French- or Spanish-speaking country is strongly recommended, but at least a four-week language stay must be proven. The International Office is happy to assist in organizing the stay abroad.

Study teaching profession

Information about study teaching profession

Teacher training takes place in the Bachelor-Master study system. The degree is equivalent to the 1st state examination. Following the Master's program, you will complete the preparatory service, which concludes with the 2nd state examination.

Language requirements

Language requirements during studies

With the beginning of the studies:

  • German: Upon application, international applicants must prove German language skills at level B1.
  • Knowledge of French or Spanish at level A2 expected

These are determined by a compulsory placement test at the beginning of the winter semester. Students with less previous knowledge are offered intensive language courses.

Until the end of the course:

  • Knowledge at level B2

Language Centre

The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.

International applicants whose native language is not German must provide proof of sufficient German language skills (level B1) upon application.
