Course Details

In the major and minor subject in Literary Studies, you will research several European and American literatures and relate them to each other. In addition, you will look at literature from a media studies perspective and in exchange with various media and artistic practices.

During your studies you will attend courses in media studies as well as film and television. You will explore the theoretical foundations and research subjects of literary studies.

You will acquire basic social and cultural skills as key qualifications for your professional activity. These include creativity, judgement, the ability to grasp structural problems as well as intercultural skills and knowledge of several foreign languages.

Literary Studies in Detail

Structure of the study programme

The bachelor's degree course at the University of Erfurt comprises a major and a minor subject (two-subject bachelor's degree) as well as the fundamental course of study. It aims to impart specialist content and occupational field orientation as well as interdisciplinary skills. The standard period of study is six semesters.

Orientation Phase (First Year)

  • Introduction to Literary Studies
  • Orientations in the history of literature in one or more literatures
  • Topics and questions of general literary studies

Qualification Phase (Second/Third Year)

  • Intercultural competence
  • Parameters of text analysis and literary theory
  • Parameters of contextualization

In the qualification phase, one of the following main subjects is studied:

  • General and comparative literature,
  • English and American Studies,
  • Modern German literary studies,
  • Romance literary studies (Romance languages and literature, Spanish studies),
  • Slavic literary studies.

Two-Subject-Bachelor

The major and minor subjects differ in terms of the content and scope of the course. In the major subject a Bachelor thesis is written.

At the University of Erfurt, you will study a major and a minor subject (two-subject bachelor) in the bachelor's program. You may have to observe combination rules.

Combination rule:

  • Literary studies can be combined with all fields of study except English and American Studies, German Studies, Romance Studies or Slavic Studies.

Language requirements

  • German: Upon application, international applicants must prove German language skills at level B1.

Until the end of the studies:

  • Knowledge of a modern foreign language at level B1
  • Knowledge of another modern foreign language at level B1 or, in addition to the proven knowledge of one of the old languages, another modern foreign language at level A2

Depending on the chosen major field of study, one of the following proofs at level B2 is required:

  • English Literature: English,
  • Modern German Literature: German,
  • Romance literary studies: French or Spanish,
  • Slavic literary studies: Russian, Czech or Polish

Language Centre

The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.
