Course content

The degree programme is offered as part of the dual teacher training for secondary schools. In the dual degree programme in English and American Studies, you will focus on the language, literature and culture of English-speaking countries. You will acquire academic foundations, practical skills, intercultural competences and will also be introduced to the didactics of teaching English. The majority of courses are taught in English.

The subject matter and objectives of the school practice are defined in the corresponding modules and are carried out in cooperation with the practice partner (training school). The university accompanies the qualification process of the students and supports them in reflecting on their experiences.

Subfields of English and American Studies:

  • Linguistics:
    Structure and use of the English language and its analysis
  • Literary Studies:
    Anglophone literature of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as literary-historical classification and analysis
  • Language (language practice):
    Fluent and stylistically appropriate command of English at an advanced level
  • Culture and history of Anglophone countries
    especially Great Britain and North America

Dual study programme for teaching profession

The dual teaching degree programme allows you to combine knowledge with practical experience and at the same time prepare intensively for your future work as a teacher. You have the opportunity to gain comprehensive insights both at the university and in school practice.

The dual secondary schools teacher training programme is divided into four academic years for the Bachelor of Education and one academic year for the Master of Education. This is followed by the preparatory service.

Study dual teaching profession secondary schools

Occupational field: Teaching English at secondary schools

The dual Bachelor of Education secondary schools programme in English and American Studies qualifies you for the teaching profession of secondary schools and enables you to transfer to the dual Master of Education secondary schools programme in English.

In the dual teaching profession secondary schools programme, you will already be working at your training school in Thuringia during your studies. Depending on your choice of second subject, you will teach another subject in addition to English (Mathematics, German, Technology/Crafts or Sport).

Specialised scientific area (8 modules: 60 LP/ECTS)

Compulsory modules:

  • Fundamentals of English Linguistics (9 CP/ECTS)
  • Fundamentals of English and American Studies (9 CP/ECTS)
  • Regional Studies of Anglophone Countries and Interculturality (6 CP/ECTS)

one of two modules on language practice:

  • ≥ B2.2* English Language Studies (6 CP/ECTS)
  • C2 English language practice (for native speakers) (6 CP/ECTS)

Compulsory modules:

  • Fundamentals of English specialised didactics/children's and youth literature (6 CP/ECTS)
  • Core module in English and Applied Linguistics (6 CP/ECTS)
  • Core module English and American Studies (6 CP/ECTS)

two consecutive modules on language practice:

  • ≥C1.1 English Language Studies (6 CP/ECTS)
  • C2 Language Practice English (for native speakers) (6 CP/ECTS)

Specialised didactics (3 modules: 18 CP/ECTS, including 6 CP/ECTS school practice)

These modules must be taken via English and American Studies:

  • Teaching Quality in Communicative English Lessons (6 CP/ECTS)
  • Developing Teaching Quality in English Lessons (6 CP/ECTS)
  • School practice for teaching English (6 CP/ECTS)

Final module (12 LP/ECTS)

  • Final module, if the bachelor's thesis is completed in English and American Studies (12 CP/ECTS)

Educational science (3 modules: 18 CP/ECTS, including 6 CP/ECTS school practice)

These modules must be taken via subject 1:

  • Education, Classroom Management, Conflict Resolution (6 CP/ECTS)
  • Learning and Development (6 CP/ECTS)
  • Fundamentals of Educational Science (6 CP/ECTS)

This comprises modules or sub-modules totalling 6 CP/ECTS in subject didactics and 6 CP/ECTS in educational sciences.

The modules must be taken via subject 1:

  • Introduction SP 01 (3 CP/ECTS)
  • Basic module SP 02 (9 CP/ECTS)
  • Basic module SP 03 (12 CP/ECTS)
  • Basic module SP 04 (12 CP/ECTS)
  • Advanced module SP 05 (9 CP/ECTS)
