Three days on campus, two days in the classroom

The dual study programme for secondary school teaching enables you to combine knowledge with practical experience and at the same time prepare intensively for your future work as a teacher. You have the opportunity to gain comprehensive insights both at the university and in school practice.

The combination of theoretical courses at the university and practice-oriented phases at schools will optimally prepare you for the demands of the teaching profession. The dual study programme focuses on familiarising prospective teachers with the latest pedagogical findings and effective teaching methods.

Your gross salary is currently €1,400 per month for the Bachelor's degree programme and €1,600 per month for the Master's degree programme (guideline of the "Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder"). The semester contribution will be paid for you.

The dual study programme for secondary school teaching is divided into four years of study for a Bachelor of Education and one year of study for a Master of Education. This is followed by the preparatory service.

Admission requirements

What requirements do you need to fulfil to study the dual study programme for secondary school teaching? A valid university entrance qualification, usually the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), is required for the undergraduate Bachelor's degree programme. Proof of a passed aptitude test is required for the subject of sport .

Structure of the study programme

Bachelor's programme (six semesters)

In the dual Bachelor of Education for secondary schools programme, you have to study two dual Bachelor's subjects (first subject and second subject). You can choose from the following five subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • German
  • English
  • Economics/Technology
  • Sport (from winter semester 25/26)

The "first subject" is the subject in which you complete your first practical school modules from the third semester in coordination with the training school. The other dual subject becomes the "second subject". In the second subject, school practice is added from the seventh semester.

You complete your Bachelor's thesis , which is geared towards the mainstream school sector. The bachelor's thesis can be completed in the first or second subject.

Master's programme (two semesters)

The Bachelor of Education is followed by the dual study programme in the Master of Education for secondary schools.

Application

Application via the career portal of the Thuringian State

In 2025, up to 50 places will again be available at teacher training colleges throughout Thuringia.
You can apply from 1 to 31 May 2025. This application does not take place at the University of Erfurt, but via the Thuringian teaching career portal:

www.karriere.thueringen.de

In the career portal, you select the desired school or the two desired subjects and submit your application. In the first year, up to 50 places were expected to be available at training schools throughout Thuringia. The list of training schools for 2025/26 will follow here in good time.

Selection and feedback

After the application deadline, the responsible school authority will contact you with further information. Selection interviews will take place and, if you are successful, a study contract will be signed with the education authority.

Contract with the school authority

Dual students receive a study contract from the Free State of Thuringia with a monthly payment and are bound to the Free State for the duration of their studies and, including the preparatory service, for a further five years.

Once you have signed the contract with the education authority, you can enrol at the University of Erfurt.
