In his introductory speech, Dr Bror Giesenbauer from the University of Bremen emphasised the importance of a holistic perspective on sustainability in the context of climate neutrality. He emphasised the importance of the so-called whole-institution approach, i.e. the holistic implementation of the concept of education for sustainable development, and spoke out in favour of taking sustainability into account in all university processes.
During the summit, the Klima-N project also presented its initiatives, which are also orientated towards the whole-institution approach. These include the development and evaluation of transformative teaching-learning arrangements for sustainable education, the development of a biodiversity and climate-friendly university campus, effective energy and resource management and the establishment of a communication centre for sustainability.
The other projects presented at the event also showcased innovative strategies for promoting sustainability at universities, including benchmarking sustainability practices, developing sustainability matrices, setting up green offices, implementing service-learning projects, certificate programmes in sustainability education, producing podcasts on sustainability initiatives and setting up laboratories and focus group discussions on sustainability issues at German universities.
