Reading: "If you don't love, you're left with nothing!"

Martin Luther King, Jr. is also an icon of non-violent resistance against oppression and racism in Germany. His life story has been told many times. Less well known is the extent to which King's fight for political freedom and social justice was rooted in his religious and spiritual beliefs. To mark the 60th anniversary of King's visit to Berlin in 1964, Michael Haspel's new book explores this theme. The 14 chapters correspond to the 14 calendar years in which King was publicly active and unfold King's spiritual and theological orientations primarily on the basis of his major speeches, sermons and texts in connection with important stages of the civil rights movement. The book is therefore neither a classic biography of King nor a history of the civil rights movement, but can certainly be read as such. Moderated by Annegret Grimm, central sections of the book will be discussed on this evening. The event will feature music by Diana Röser (vocals) and André Köhn (keyboard).
