Ordre des Palmes académiques for Susanne Rau

Susanne Rau, Professor of History and Cultures of Modern Spaces at the University of Erfurt, has been honoured by France's Minister of Education and Youth Pap Ndiaye with the "Ordre des Palmes Académiques françaises" (short: Palmes Académiques). This is one of the highest awards in France for services to education. The award ceremony took place during the summer festival of the Max-Weber-Kolleg, where the historian from Erfurt received the order from the French First Counsellor, Thomas Guibert.

Susanne Rau was honoured with the Order of the "Palmes Académiques".

Napoleon Bonaparte originally created this official award in 1808 for members of the university. In 1866, the award was extended to persons outside the teaching profession who had rendered great services to education. They were appointed either officier de l'Instruction publique or officier d'académie. Today, the "Palmes Académiques" can also be awarded to foreigners and French people living abroad who actively contribute to the spread of French culture in the world.

The Association of Members of the Order(L'-Association des Membres de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques // AMOPA for short), founded in 1962, is under the patronage of the President of the French Republic and the Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour. AMOPA has formed 115 sections for Paris, the departments of France and overseas and is represented in 75 countries on the five continents. AMOPA facilitates cultural activities and friendly intergenerational encounters for its members. In 1978, a foundation was set up to extend its activities to young people and students.

Whether in the context of her guest professorship in France, a German-French student exchange, her involvement in the festival "Weimarer Rendezvous mit der Geschichte" (Weimar Rendezvous with History), in the context of exhibitions or her research in the bi-national CoMOR project: Susanne Rau has been committed to German-French cooperation and a corresponding academic exchange as well as in educational projects for many years. This commitment has now been recognised with the award.
