The background to this is that in the course of implementing a new guidance and orientation system for the University of Erfurt, the existing postal addresses are also to be revived and the aforementioned place is to be integrated into the system. Currently, all buildings operate under the collective address Nordhäuser Straße 63, which does not always make it easy - e.g. for suppliers (and visitors who want to reach us via navigation systems) - to find the specific building. Nevertheless, there are already specific postal addresses, but hardly anyone has used them in the past, e.g. Mathes-Maler-Straße, Alfred-Weber-Platz, Saalestraße and Alfred-Weber-Allee. Meanwhile, the square between the cafeteria building and teaching building 1 has not yet been given a name.
The collected suggestions have now been evaluated by a jury consisting of members of the Guidance and Orientation System Working Group and the Presidium. First place went to "Sidonia Hedwig Zäunemann", which was by far the most frequently named by university members. Second place went to "Hierana-Platz" as a reminiscence of the "Former University of Erfurt".
A total of 44 name suggestions were received by Department 4: Facility Management. "A remarkable turnout," says Bernd Sauerbrey, Project Manager for the new guidance and orientation system on campus. However, not all suggestions met the criteria set by the city for naming - such as the connection to Erfurt or the University or the fact that streets and squares may only be named after people who have been deceased for at least three years.
The two names that have now been selected will now be forwarded as a joint proposal from the University of Erfurt to the city's street name commission and applied for naming. The street name commission is expected to discuss the proposal at its September meeting and - if the naming is approved - submit it to the Education and Culture Commission for a decision.
