In the book, which was commissioned by the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany, 25 young academics show in vivid contributions how they approach the multi-layered nature of the GDR and its after-effects up to the present day in Germany as a whole with new research approaches. The texts deal with everyday life, cultural spaces, but also the political and security apparatus. The perspectives chosen range from the period of reconstruction to the years after the fall of the wall. The volume reflects the diversity of methods used in current research and invites further reflection on the GDR and East Germany.
