Democracy, transformation and sustainability are three central paradigms of our time. Only rarely are they thought of together. Each area has its own requirements, which can generate mutual conflicts. Democratic participation can not only promote the ecological transformation of a society, but also hinder it. Political transformation, as in the course of German reunification, can in turn limit participation and create power inequalities that have repercussions for generations. This memorial volume for the political scientist Professor Alexander Thumfart (University of Erfurt), who died in 2022, honours a scholar and politician who sought to connect the horizons of democracy, transformation and sustainability throughout his life. Fundamental questions of post-democracy, the public sphere and dialogical coexistence were central motifs of his thinking and work. Alexander Thumfart was a role model in thinking together the great issues of our time and in the interaction of theory and practice of the intellectual.
