Joachim Kalka is a translator, editor, essayist and an avid book collector. As a translator, he has a soft spot for older texts and for the spice of colloquialisms. In 1996, the German Academy for Language and Poetry awarded him the Johann Heinrich Voß Prize for his translations of the American avant-garde author Gilbert Sorrentino and elected him a member the following year. The Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts accepted him in 2009. In 2014, he received the Johann Heinrich Cotta Translator's Prize of the City of Stuttgart. His essays have been published by Berenberg Verlag in Berlin since 2006.
With the event series "I unpack my library", the Friends of the Gotha Research Library invite well-known personalities to talk about their book collections - and thus also about their lives.
