"Warum ich die Hoffnung nicht aufgebe" – Gesine Schwan in conversation with Holger Zaborowski

In the run-up to her 80th birthday, Gesine Schwan spoke with Holger Zaborowski, Professor at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Erfurt. Together, they discuss general political and social issues as well as questions about faith and the church in their conversation. The conversation has now been published as a book by Patmos-Verlag.

In a very personal conversation with Holger Zaborowski, Gesine Schwan talks about her faith in difficult times, why she considers the decline in faith to be a cultural impoverishment, and why she does not leave the Catholic Church despite all the criticism she has.

They vividly reflect on human interaction in society, exploring questions such as why power can seduce people into stupidity, why dealing with guilt is becoming increasingly difficult, and why poverty is not just about money. But above all: why Gesine Schwan does not give up hope despite multiple crises.

About Gesine Schwan

Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan is, among other things, President of the Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform. She became known to a large public as a candidate for the office of Federal President. The Romance philologist and political scientist was head of the Viadrina University in Frankfurt/Oder from 1999 to 2008 and was the coordinator for German-Polish cooperation appointed by the German government from 2004 to 2009. She has received numerous awards for her work on German-Polish and German-French understanding.
