University of Erfurt increases proportion of recycled paper to more than 95 percent

The University of Erfurt has increased the proportion of "Blauer Engel" recycled paper used in administration by 39.30 percentage points to 95.61 percent within a year. This puts the University of Erfurt in third place in the "Up-and-Comer of the Year" category of the "Papieratlas" university competition organized by the Initiative Pro Recycling Paper (IPR).

50 universities and universities of applied sciences participate in the competition and achieve a new best value with an average of more than 79 percent recycled paper.

By using "Blauer Engel" paper, the University of Erfurt is making an important contribution to climate protection and resource conservation: recycled paper saves an average of 78 percent water and 68 percent energy in production compared to virgin fiber paper and causes significantly fewerCO2 emissions. Last year, the University of Erfurt saved more than 310,000 liters of water and over 70,000 kilowatt hours of energy.

Background

The "Papieratlas" has been documenting paper consumption and recycling paper rates at German universities every year since 2016. The partners are the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, the German Federal Environment Agency and the German University Association. In addition to the university competition, the Paper Atlas has already been held for cities since 2008 and for districts since 2018.
