The Collaborative Research Centre “Structural Change of Property” and the Southern Historical Association’s International Graduate Network invite postgraduate scholars to a workshop at the University of Erfurt in Germany entitled “Racial Capitalism in the Southern United States during the Civil War and Reconstruction Era.” This early career workshop offers participants the chance to present their ongoing work and receive comprehensive and varied feedback from European and American scholars.
Racial Capitalism in the Southern United States during the Civil War and Reconstruction Era
The Collaborative Research Centre “Structural Change of Property” and the Southern Historical Association’s International Graduate Network invite postgraduate scholars to a workshop at the University of Erfurt in Germany entitled “Racial Capitalism in the Southern United States during the Civil War and Reconstruction Era.”
This early career workshop offers participants the chance to present their ongoing work and receive comprehensive and varied feedback from European and American scholars. To that end, each paper will be pre-circulated among the workshop participants.
The workshop will be held in person in Erfurt, Germany to foster lively discussion and offer a networking opportunity to further connect international scholars of Southern Studies from Europe and the US. The Research Centre will offer financial support for travel expenses and accommodation.
Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to write a short blog post (~1,500 words) about their research, which might be published as part of a workshop blog series on the Collaborative Research Centre’s website (https://sfb294-eigentum.de/de/blog/).

The deadline for applications will be April 1st, 2024, and successful applications will be informed by April 8th 2024. The deadline for paper submission will be June 1st.
