Prof. Benno Werlen and the UNESCO Chair, the appointment enables closer cooperation with UN organisations in the fields of research and education.

Background
The WAAS comprises almost 700 members - including eleven from Germany - who were selected for their outstanding achievements in the natural, technological and social sciences, in the humanities and arts, and in various professions and areas of public service. The World Academy was officially founded in December 1960 by eminent intellectuals such as Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, Bertrand Russell and Joseph Needham, the co-founder of UNESCO. It sees itself as an independent institution committed to impartial dialogue, free from vested interests or regional ties, and to global cooperation across all national borders. Since its foundation, the Academy has developed into an important voice of transdisciplinary, socially responsible research and has, among other things, advisory status for UNESCO and the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC).
