This day of remembrance was proclaimed by the United Nations. It is followed by the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence until 10 December - Human Rights Day.
The criminal statistics on intimate partner violence published by the Federal Criminal Police Office the day before yesterday clearly show the extent of the problem in Germany, says Dr Theresia Piszczan, the Equal Opportunities Officer at the University of Erfurt, on the occasion of the day of action: "In 2020, a woman was a victim of intimate partner violence every 4.5 minutes on average. 139 women were killed by their (ex-)partner - almost every 2.5 days a woman. With this campaign, however, we do not only want to draw attention to physical violence in partnerships. In our opinion, psychological violence and the increasing digital gender-specific violence in the form of stalking, doxing, cyberharassment, hate speech etc. must also be addressed. That's why we would like to make it clear to all those affected to seek help and remind everyone else not to look the other way."
