This year, too, the President of the “Bundestag”, Bärbel Bas, has again taken on the patronage of the campaign. She is once again drawing attention to the fact that violence against women is also ubiquitous in Germany. It starts with everyday sexism and ends with femicides. In most cases, violence against women is perpetrated by men. Most perpetrators are close to the women: violence in partnerships is the most common form of violence and includes physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological violence. Violence in partnerships often begins with verbal abuse, which is often not recognised as such at first, and escalates increasingly (‘spiral of violence’). Femicides are the extreme form of this violence (source: BKA Federal Situation Report on Domestic Violence 2023).
The ‘Orange the World’ campaign, which the University of Erfurt is once again supporting, aims to raise awareness of this issue.
