New blog post of the Gotha Research Library: "From Exploration to Knowledge? Approaches and Perspectives of Digital Collection Visualisations". Report on the Workshop on November 10, 2023

Whether in the museum, the library or the archives, great efforts are being made to digitise collections and present them online. The use of digital data sets is completely free from the material constraints limiting the possibilities of physical exhibitions. How the representations of the objects and the born-digitals appear on monitors is not just a question of digital aesthetics and technical feasibility: since the usability of the online portals has highest priority, digital hermeneutics as well as findings from the psychology of perception and media and communication sciences are also helpful in tackling the task of presenting collections digitally.

In view of this complex challenge, it is all the more important for GLAM institutions to take a critical look at this topic and engage in an exchange about the requirements and limits of digital collection visualisation. To this end, a workshop was held on November 10, 2023, at the Gotha Research Library of the University of Erfurt, which not only served the purpose of theoretical reflection and professional exchange, but also provided space for creative practice.
