The promotion of sustainability-related vocational action competencies, the design of appropriate didactic methods and the qualification of vocational training personnel are central challenges of vocational training that increasingly integrates sustainability. The pilot projects and the scientific support provided in the "Vocational Education and Training for Sustainable Development" funding priority, which the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training commissioned and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, have come up with scientifically sound solutions that have been tested in practice. The volume now published contains the results of this work. It also presents overarching findings, for example on the training and further education of in-company training personnel or on the significance of the pilot projects in the context of the standard vocational training position "environmental protection and sustainability".
In one chapter, Claudia Müller and Jens Reißland, employees at the Department for vocational education and further education at the University of Erfurt, describe the findings from the project "TRANS-SUSTAIN - Transversal competence management for more sustainability in vocational profiles using the example of the butcher's trade and the meat products industry". In this two-year pilot project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, a team of scientists conducted studies in small and medium-sized butchers' businesses from 2019 to 2021 with the aim of helping to anchor and maintain professional experience and skills in the businesses sustainably and across generations. In a series of workshops, trainers in companies were sensitized to the challenges of vocational training for sustainable development. They were then asked to implement individual in-company projects with their trainees.
