Guest Lecture: "Catholicism in the USA and the American 'Culture War' as a Theological Crisis".

Donald Trump's presidency has exacerbated the American crisis. But it is not only a crisis of society and state, but, according to the thesis of church historian Massimo Faggioli, also a crisis of the Catholic Church, as the theologian will explain at a lecture in Erfurt. At the invitation of the Theological Research Centre at the University of Erfurt, Faggioli will speak on "Catholicism in the USA and the American 'Culture War' as a Theological Crisis" on Wednesday, 2 June, at 7.15 pm.

Faggioli diagnoses a religious and theological crisis. It is inextricably linked, he says, to the return of religious beliefs that undermine the moral-religious consensus that forms the basis of democracy in America. The new factor is the re-emergence of religious ideas in mainstream culture that have been considered settled and abandoned on the part of academic Euro-Atlantic, post-Vatican II Catholic theology.

Massimo Faggioli is a professor in the Department of theology and religious studies at Villanova University (Philadelphia). His research interests include modern church history, questions of ecclesiology and the relationship between Catholicism and politics.

The event will be held in English and online. All interested parties are cordially invited. Those who wish to attend can request the access link from Christopher Tschorn (christopher.tschorn@uni-erfurt.de).
