Despite Corona: the number of first-year students remains stable

Despite all corona-related fears, the University of Erfurt was able to keep the number of students stable this year and has started the winter semester 2020/21 with a total of 6240 students.

With a total of 1206, the number of first-year students in the first semester of higher education made a particular contribution to this. Of these, 127 students from abroad began their studies at the University of Erfurt in October. The Bachelor's programmes in Educational Science, Special Needs Education, Primary and Elementary Education and International Relations met with particularly great interest.

Carmen Voigt, Spokesperson of the University of Erfurt: "The figures continue to prove that we are fulfilling the task set to us by politics of keeping young people in the country but also bringing them into the country, even under considerably more difficult conditions. The University of Erfurt is making enormous efforts to ensure high quality studies and good supervision - especially in the year of the Corona Pandemic". Against the background of the worldwide occurrence of infections, the university had already conducted the summer semester in digital form, now the winter semester must also be conducted online as far as possible. "The situation demands an incredible amount not only from the students, but also from the lecturers and the science support staff," explains Carmen Voigt. "But thanks to the committed cooperation of everyone involved, we have so far succeeded in this tour de force. Nevertheless, we hope, of course, that the situation will normalise as quickly as possible and that we can return to regular or attendance operation."
