BMBF funds new research project on communicating scientific uncertainty

In November 2023, the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour at the University of Erfurt will launch a new research project entitled "UncertainTEAM".

In a multi-method study, the research team is investigating how journalism and research communication deal with scientific uncertainty and how uncertainty can be communicated in a way that is appropriate for the target group and with a view to social crises. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the "UncertainTEAM" project for the next three years.

To this end, the scientists involved are planning a large representative survey, qualitative interviews and workshops with citizens, journalists and science communicators as well as a series of experimental studies on the impact of different ways of presenting uncertainty.

An interdisciplinary team from the fields of communication science, sociology, health communication, psychology and educational science is working together at the IPB. The project manager is JProf. Dr Fabian Prochazka. Also involved are Professor Dr Guido Mehlkop, Dr Eva Thomm, Professor Dr Johannes Bauer, Professor Dr Cornelia Betsch, Dr des. Sabine Best, Dr Mirjam Jenny, Professor Dr Tilmann Betsch and Professor Dr Babette Brinkmann (TH Köln).
