What remains after the Holocaust?

People around the world on January 27 commemorate the Holocaust, the mass murder of some six million Jews by the Nazis.

However, 78 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, with the extinction of contemporary witnesses and the dominance of present-day conflicts, the memory of the Holocaust seems to have receded into the background. What remains of the German culture of remembrance in an increasingly diverse society? Holocaust Remembrance Day is therefore all the more reason to reflect on the connection between remembering and commemorating the Holocaust and migration, anti-Semitism and racism. Nancy Alhachem, research associate at the Max-Weber-Kolleg of the University of Erfurt, is conducting research on forms of Holocaust remembrance and trauma coping in the context of migration and flight as part of her doctoral dissertation.

She reports on her work in our research blog "WortMelder".
