Remembering the Shoah in the GDR was not a success story. But even before the state-enforced events on the 50th anniversary of the November pogroms in 1988, there were impulses to keep the memory of Jewish victims alive and to articulate a stubborn form of anti-fascism. The lecture sheds light on these attempts and outlines developments in commemoration since the late 1970s.
Alexander Walther studied history and English for the teaching profession at grammar schools at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. For his state examination thesis, he conducted interviews with former Bosnian civil war refugees and then worked at the European College Jena. He is currently doing his doctorate at the FSU Jena.
