Presenting fresh readings of the under-researched novel, which was first published in twelve individual instalments in Harper's Bazaar from 1907-08, European and US-American scholars of the European Study Group of Nineteenth-Century American Literature convened in Zagreb, Croatia in November 2024. The event also included an invited talk by June Howard, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emerita of English, American Culture, and Women's Studies from the University of Michigan, USA, and a plenary keynote by Cécile Roudeau, professor of nineteenth-century American Literature at Université Paris Cité.
