A new telephone system was put into operation at the University of Erfurt in September 2015. This is a so-called "Voice-over-IP" telecommunication system.

The most important change compared to the old system is that a separate telephone network on campus is no longer used for telephony, but all calls are handled via the data network and the Internet Protocol (IP). External telephone calls are transmitted via the internet, so that the university no longer needs a classic telephone (system) connection. With the introduction of the new VoIP system, new telephone terminals, so-called IP telephones, were introduced throughout the campus of the University of Erfurt and its branch offices.
