Discovery - search more precisely

Discovery Suchtipps

Discovery, the University of Erfurt's search portal, makes searching for literature simple and intuitive.

Using the search slot, search queries can be entered - just as with well-known search engines - without any special prior knowledge in the search.

As a result, hits are delivered that match the search query as closely as possible. The hit list is automatically sorted by importance (relevance). Matching results are usually displayed on the first pages.

There are various options for making the search query more precise if the hits are too imprecise:

Filter

Limit the search list using the filter function according to formal criteria or a time period.

For the "Format" section (e.g. book, essay, sheet music, film), several checkmarks can be set. For the "Type" of publication (complete, printed or electronic) you have to choose one. For the type "electronic" not all format combinations are possible.

The desired period can be set with the slider or by manual input.

Examples:

  • Printed or electronic books
  • Essays or journals
  • Publications from the year 2000

Search for exact word order

With the "phrase search" you put a word or a group of words in quotation marks.

This approach is useful when searching for the exact title of a book. It is also useful when searching for specific people.

Example:

Use search key

Discovery allows searching within specific search fields, such as authors, keywords or numbers like signatures and ISBN. The actual search term is preceded by the name for the search field (= search key), followed by the term in brackets.

Selection of search fields and search keys:

  • Persons: authorauthor("strittmatter, peter") Italso makes sense to put the name in quotation marks for a precise search for exactly this person.
