Your Bachelor's degree certificate can be handed in later if it is not yet available at the date of application. In case of admission, you will have to present your certificate until December the same year.
Official Transcript of Records
Besides the official transcript of records, students from another subject area within the social sciences should enclose an additional list that documents their knowledge in the field of media and communication studies. For example, you can refer to the content of certain seminars in your transcript.
Language proficiency certificates

if applicable: proofs of Internships and professional experience
Internships and professional experience that are related to the content of the master's program "Global Communication: Politics and Society" must be proven with respective documents.
Selection Interviews
After we have checked your written application documents, we will invite qualified applicants to a selection interview. You will receive your invitation via the application portal (please check your status regularly). Interviews with students, who applied late, will usually take place in late July. All interviews are conducted online via Webex.
The interview takes approx. 15 minutes and will be conducted in English. Your letter of motivation provides the basis for our conversation. Hence, the letter of motivation is of special relevance! We will evaluate your communication skills and your ability to assess your own strengths and weaknesses, your ability to construct academically sound arguments and comprehend complex questions, your international and intercultural competence, experiences and interests, and your professional interest in completing the academic master's degree programme in question.
Candidates can score up to 40 points in the interview. The interviewer(s) will base their questions on the applicant's personal statement (motivation letter), which therefore is of high relevance. Bachelor's degree classifications are converted into points; candidates with a converted mark of 1.0 receive the full score of 40 points. If the converted mark falls short of 1.0, one point is subtracted for every missing tenth (0.1). In cases where the candidate has not yet received their bachelor's degree certificate, the selection committee will determine the candidate’s required mark based on their interview performance. If the candidate achieves that mark, the competent examination committee at the Faculty of Philosophy will admit them. To pass the selection procedure, candidates must achieve at least 60 out of 80 points.

How do I know if I meet the admission requirements?
All applicants must pass a selection procedure before their eligibility for admission can be confirmed.
We ask for your understanding that we cannot give any statements about your eligibility prior to the official application process. Please note that we can only check your documents in the official application process. Hence, we like to ask you to not send us any documents attached to your Emails. We always try to answer all your individual questions, but we cannot pre-check your application! You have the possibility to demonstrate your motivation and academic background in the required motivation letter comprehensively.
How can I prove the required knowledge in media and communication and/or empirical methods in my application?
Your Transcript of Records usually documents the scope, evaluation, and content of your prior studies. If you do not come from a relevant bachelor degree within the social science (e.g. communication studies/ /media studies/journalism studies), you can apply if you can prove prior academic knowledge in the respective fields of study.
In this case, we recommend to include an additional list that documents the form of knowledge aqcuisition (e.g. university course, workshop, research project or something similar), a reference in your documents (course number in transcript, additional certificates or something similar), short explanation of contents (certain theories/concepts/methods you have dealt with), and details of workload/credits/scope.
The same applies for your methodological knowledge. If you are unsure whether you have already acchieved 12 ECTS in your prior studies, we recommend to add further information about your methodological skills (e.g. empirical parts of your BA-thesis, of courses etc.), which we can use as a basis for evaluating equivalency.
Which language proficiencies are required for the application?
Since the Master's program "Global Communication: Politics and Society" is a predominantly English language consecutive degree, German language proficiency is not a mandatory requirement for your application. The program requires very good English proficiency. We accept different certificates, e.g. TOEFL iBT: 80 or above, IELTS 6.5 or above; C1 (GER). Equally accepted standards are a Bachelor degree in an English language program or six months of English language higher education experience in an English speaking country. If the language of instruction in your prior Bachelor degree has been English, we need an official verification, either in the form of a reference in your certificate or an additional official letter by your University or Department.
However, we highly recommend improving your German skills before or during your studies so that you can benefit from additional courses that are taught in German and which complement the core curriculum. Moreover, German language skills will help you while you live in Germany and especially internship and job offers usually include basic German language requirements.
Once you are registered as an official student at the University of Erfurt, German courses of all levels can be taken regularly and for free at the Language Center of the University of Erfurt. In order to improve or refresh your language skills in either English, German or any other language, we recommend to make use of the various offers (e.g. language courses, self-study center) by the Language Center.
I do have practical experience in the media sector. Will you acknowledge my practical competence?
Although we will acknowledge your practical experiences in the media sector in the context of your professional motivation, you still need to prove academic knowledge in the field of media and communication studies since practical knowledge cannot substitute academic knowledge.
I do not have a Bachelor degree at the date of submitting my application. Can I submit these documents later?
Yes. You can hand in your Bachelor's degree certificate until 15 December each year. In this case you are provisionally enrolled before.
How long does it usually take until my application will be processed?
We process applications continuously and attempt a timely response. However, the time until your response might vary according to the respective number of new applications received.
After the submission of your application you will either receive an invitation to a personal selection interview via Email or a rejection, which will be shown in your application portal. Selection interviews take place continuously. Interview slots for all applications which are sent to us towards the end of the application period will usually take place in late July. The time slots will be published at the Homepage in due time.
We kindly request that you refrain from asking about the status of your application since it slows down the whole process for all!
