Master Programme Applied Linguistics

The MA programme Applied Linguistics – Acquisition, Processing and Use of Language provides postgraduate students with detailed knowledge about linguistic theories and their applications in a variety of contexts. The degree programme introduces students to different methods and theories in key areas of linguistic research. Students learn how to use these methods and theories to investigate and analyse linguistic topics in a variety of areas.

The choice of compulsory and elective modules enables students to specialize in different areas of applied linguistics.

The MA programme and its specialization areas are closely related to the following activities that are intended to assist postgraduate students: university research focus “Education – teaching, learning and media socialization” and the research group “Competence in Language: Issues in Language Development, Processing and Use” in the post-graduate and post-doctoral programme (EPPP) at Erfurt.

Information for prospective students

Admission Requirements

In order to be admitted to our Master of Arts programme “Applied Linguistics” you will need a relevant undergraduate degree with a mark that corresponds to the German grade 2.3 or better.

Relevant undergraduate degree are:

  • a relevant linguistics degree
  • a language and literature degree (also as part of a teacher’s degree), in which the sum of credits acquired in classes with a linguistic focus is 20 credits or above
  • a psychology degree if it contains a component in linguistic or cognitive psychology with at least 20 credits

Students also need to have listening and reading skills in English at C1 level. Students without a certificate confirming this may alternatively take the OPT test before beginning their studies.

If individual admission requirements are not met, the examination board may grant admission to the programme with specific requirements that then need to completed while studying on the programme.

Admission to the master "Applied Linguistics" has to be applied for centrally at the division Studium und Lehre from 1 April to 15 July.
