Study abroad
It is advisable to spend one semester abroad. The 3rd semester offers an ideal optional window of mobility.
University partnerships exist with both European and non-European countries, for example with Spain, Estonia, Lithuania, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia and the USA. Individual consultation will be offered by the program.
If you are interested in studying abroad, please follow the information provided by the Department of Media and Communication Studies for outgoing students as well as by the International Office.
Postcards from abroad
Our student Lea Hepp spent an exchange semester in Tartu, Estonia in the winter semester 2019/20.
"Tere! - Or 'Hi' from Estonia. I’m currently studying for one semester at Tartu University, which is one of the oldest universities in Europe. And it’s not just about the impressive buildings here. The courses I am taking are very interesting, such as Political Culture, Civil Society or History of the Baltic Sea Region. Just like in Erfurt, the courses follow a comparative approach - with a special focus on the development of post-communist countries. The course "Contemporary Media and New Publics" deals with the influence of the internet on media in general, but also focuses on how it changes publics and discourses within society. In a groupwork, we analyse the „new public sphere“ of the social movement "Fridays for Future" on Facebook and how they communicate.
But I also learned many more useful things like: never, ever forget your umbrella. Or: No matter how hard you study (and you have to write a lot of papers here), you’ll never be as good as the internet-connection even on the countryside (true!). And the landscape is incredibly beautiful, especially in autumn!"
Neringa Venclovaitė spent an exchange semester in Taipei, Taiwan in the winter semester 2019/20.
„你好 (Nǐ hǎo) from Taiwan! I arrived here 4 weeks ago and was overwhelmed by the city of Taipei and its rich and diverse culture and history. I am currently enrolled as an exchange student at National Chengchi University at the College of Communication, where I am attending the International Master's Program in International Communication Studies (IMICS). I was already able to discover many parallels to the MA program Global Communication back in Erfurt! The two courses I am attending for my exchange semester are „Popular culture in Taiwan“ and „Globalization and Transnationalism“ - with a focus on Chinese diaspora. Moreover, I am taking a Mandarin language course which is very challenging, but at the same time very rewarding. The lecturers at Chengchi University seem very ambitious and engaged, which is why I am enjoying my stay a lot!“
