Summer School: Cyber Culture: Erfurt, 12-23 August 2014
Rationale
The word cyber popularly refers to the use of computers, virtual reality or the Internet. The Internet as it stands is deeply penetrating in our lives and become parts of daily routines. However, we rarely have the chances to review what the Internet actually means to us. The Internet enables real time connections for people across the globe, it helps construct self‐ and group identities and thus changes the time‐space relations. The cyber communities possess strength in generating supports from peer users and its potential in connecting people for knowledge sharing, stimulating public debates or initiating social movements, domestic and international alike. It is with these features in mind, the Chair of Muslim Culture and Religious History at the University of Erfurt has initiated a Summer School on Cyber Culture to develop a critical understanding about the inter‐relations between cyberspace and cyber-communities. It focuses among other aspects that how do we describe the social relations that are shaped by the Internet.
In this regard, the Chair of Muslim Culture and Religious History at the University of Erfurt is inviting applications for its summer school on Cyber Culture in Erfurt, Germany, from 12-23 August 2014. The topics covered in this Summer School would focus on: Religion in Cyber World, Internet and Social Movements, Networked Society and Cyber Journalism.
For Pakistani Students
Eligibility Criteria
This summer school is only offered to the University of Erfurt's cooperating institution in Pakistan
- Only Bachelor (4 Year) and Master students currently enrolled in
- the Peshawar University
- Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences, University of Punjab, Lahore &
- Lahore College for Women University, Lahore, Pakistan.
- Strong interest/experience in socio-political activities
- Active writers/bloggers/female students are highly encouraged
- Citizen of Pakistan
- Passport (if available shall be valid for at least one year).
- Requirement of passport is not mandatory.
What is included?
Every successful Pakistani participant will be entitled to:
- Excursions to Berlin and Weimar
- Accommodation in Erfurt/Berlin
- Travel to and from Frankfurt Airport
- Welcome and Farewell dinner
- 24/7 travel card for trams/busses in Erfurt
- Stipend worth 100 Euros for expenses such as meals
- Air Travel allowance up to max. 625 € upon arrival
Note:
All the participants from Pakistan will be reimbursed their travel costs of 625 Euros including travel insurance upon their arrival in Erfurt. Erfurt University will not send the tickets or transfer travel amount to the participants in advance, instead they have to be bought by the participants themselves. The maximum amount reimbursed for the air tickets is only 625 Euros even if the tickets costs are higher than 625 Euros.
What is expected?
- Successful participants will be shared a literature/reader in June in order to prepare for the lectures.
- Students are expected to actively engage in academic discussions
- Students will be regularly taking part in mock as well as planned workshops
- Students shall possess video making/editing skills in order to record and edit short videos
- Successful participants shall arrange their own air tickets whereas only a maximum of 625€ will be reimbursed upon arrival in Erfurt. The University of Erfurt or its cooperating institutions will not provide ticket or financial assistance prior to the summer school.
- Successful participants shall arrange travel/health insurance themselves.
- The stipend of worth 100 Euros is meant for daily breakfasts, luncheons and/or dinners.

- Successful candidates will be announced on 31.03.2014

Only the shortlisted candidates would be invited for selection workshop/interview for the final selection.
For Erfurtian Students

- BA/ MA/ Ph.D students currently enrolled in the Erfurt University
- Strong interest/experience in socio-political activities
- Active writers/bloggers/female students are highly encouraged
What is included?
Every successful Erfurtian participant will be entitled to:
- Access to summer school lectures and workshops
- Excursions to Berlin and Weimar
- Accommodation in Berlin
- Welcome and Farewell dinner
Erfurtian students can also earn credits for the summer school by officially signing up it as a regular course in ELVIS
What is expected?
- Successful participants will be shared a literature/reader in June in order to prepare for the lectures.
- Students are expected to actively engage in academic discussions
- Students will be regularly taking part in mock as well as planned workshops
- Students shall possess video making/editing skills in order to record and edit short videos
