New research project on communicating scientific uncertainty

Over the next three years, the BMBF will be funding our "UncertainTEAM" project, which is based at the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour. In a multi-method study, we are investigating how journalism and research communication deal with scientific uncertainty and how uncertainty can be communicated in a way that is appropriate for the target group and with a view to social crises.
To this end, we are planning a large representative survey, qualitative interviews and workshops with citizens, journalists and science communicators as well as a series of experimental studies on the impact of different ways of presenting uncertainty.
All participating professorships are involved at the IPB: We work in an interdisciplinary team from communication science, sociology, health communication, psychology and educational science. The project manager is JProfessor Dr Fabian Prochazka, also involved are Professor Dr Guido Mehlkop, Dr Eva Thomm, Professor Dr Johannes Bauer, Professor Dr Cornelia Betsch, Dr Sabine Best, Dr Mirjam Jenny, Professor Dr Tilmann Betsch and Professor Dr Babette Brinkmann (TH Köln).
