Extended "Christmas break" in the winter semester 2022/23

In a circular letter today, the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Erfurt, Professor Gerd Mannhaupt, informed about the plans for an extended "Christmas break" in the coming winter semester 2022/23. Before and after the semester break (from 19 to 23 December and from 9 to 14 January), courses are to be held online and staff members should work at home as far as possible.

The background to this is that the University of Erfurt, as well as society as a whole, will continue to be confronted with high infection figures and increased transmission risks for COVID infections in the winter semester 2022/23. "In addition, the energy crisis presents us all with the challenge of making a substantial contribution to saving energy. Although the supply of energy for the University of Erfurt will be available as long as possible, we also want to contribute to saving energy," Mannhaupt announces in his letter.

In order to counter both problems in a timely and sustainable manner, the Presidium has decided that all courses, as well as workshops, lectures and colloquia, will be offered online during the week prior to the lecture break. This way, students as well as teachers can be more certain that they will not take any hidden infections with them into their family environment at the turn of the year, and there is also better protection for the "university family" after the turn of the year. In addition, heating energy can be saved for four weeks. Attendance will thus end on 17.12.2022 and will resume in the new year from 16.01.2023. Professional and school internships are not affected by this if the institutions concerned have not established their own rules in this regard.

"We are currently still in talks about the services and opening hours of the university library and the student union," explains the vice-president. "We will of course inform you immediately about the results and possible further measures."
