About the event

Mysticism can serve as a tool to commit spiritual and sexual abuse unhindered. The belief of being chosen in an exclusive sense generates a willingness to sacrifice in new spiritual communities that leads to spirals of violence. Many founders of such communities were revered as charismatic preachers or outstanding mystics - until it was revealed that they had been practising spiritual and sexual violence for years. The lecture will explore the questions of where abuse begins, when mysticism becomes toxic and when the exercise of power needs to change.
