Public discussion with former Algerian labour migrants in the GDR

The 49th anniversary of the racist riots against Algerians in Erfurt in August 1975 is almost exactly the same day. One of the contemporary witnesses experienced this and would like to talk about it. The contemporary witness talk offers a unique opportunity to get to know the perspectives of Algerian labour migrants in the GDR: What was their life like in the GDR? What were working and living conditions like? How were friendships and relationships organised? Why did Algerians organise strikes in the GDR and were they successful? How did they experience racism in the GDR? How did they experience solidarity? And how do they view the period of their lives in the GDR today?

The discussion will be held bilingually in German and French. The French parts will be interpreted simultaneously into German.

The event will take place in the cube of the Andreasstraße memorial and education centre (Andreasstr. 37a, 99084 Erfurt) and is a cooperation between the Oral History Research Centre of the University of Erfurt, Decolonize Erfurt and the Thuringian State Centre for Political Education (Landeszentrale für politische Bildung).
