This time's guest is Jan Daniel Schubert (University of Erfurt/European University Institute Florence). In his doctoral project "Algerian labour migrants in the GDR" Jan Daniel Schubert is conducting life history interviews with former labour migrants and people close to them, e.g. their children or (ex-)partners, in order to make their perspectives accessible for a transnational historiography of the GDR. Between 1974 and 1984, over 8,000 Algerian labour migrants came to the GDR. Most of them had to return to Algeria at the end of a four-year stay. The premature end of Algerian labour migration - Algeria terminated the labour migration agreement in the early 1980s - contributed to the fact that the life stories of these migrant workers are not very visible today, even in the field of "migrant workers in the GDR". The project "Algerian labour migrants in the GDR" addresses this gap.
