Prof. Dr. Martin Fuchs, Prof. Dr.

Martin Fuchs studierte Anthropologie, Soziologie und Moderne Südasiatische Sprachen und Literaturen an den Universitäten Marburg, Heidelberg und Frankfurt/Main und promovierte 1985 im Fach Soziologie an der Universität Frankfurt/Main. Er habilitierte sich 1997 an der Freien Universität Berlin für Allgemeine Soziologie. Martin Fuchs war Lehrbeauftragter an den Universitäten Zürich, Heidelberg und an der Freien Universität Berlin und arbeitete als Lehrstuhlvertreter an der Universität Paderborn, Visiting Professor an der Central European University, Budapest, und Associate Professor an der University of Canterbury, Christchurch (Neuseeland). Martin Fuchs war Gründungsdirektor des New Zealand South Asia Center (2008–2009). Seit 2009 hat Martin Fuchs die Professur für Indische Religionsgeschichte am Max-Weber-Kolleg für kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Studien der Universität Erfurt inne. Martin Fuchs war einer der Initiatoren des M.S. Merian - R. Tagore International Centre of Advanced Studies "Metamorphoses of the Political" (ICAS-MP) in Neu Delhi, dessen Basis ein Netzwerk von mehreren indischen und deutschen Forschungsinstituten und Universitäten bildet. Er vertritt die Universität Erfurt in dem Konsortium und fungiert zeitweise als deutscher Co-Direktor von ICAS-MP.

Die Forschungsinteressen von Martin Fuchs liegen in den Bereichen Kultur- und Sozialtheorie, Anthropologie, Soziologie und Religionswissenschaft Südasiens, soziale und religiöse Bewegungen, Dalits, Stadtanthropologie und Menschenrechtsfragen.
