In my research project, I am investigating the influence of self-help literature on the conduct of life. At the centre of the theoretical considerations is the concept of narrative selves, which is about how individuals tell themselves and others in different social contexts who they are, how they got that way and why they think, feel and act in a certain way. By means of these self-narratives, the individuals interpret their lives, describe their everyday life and at the same time structure the way they conduct their lives. With a narrative-theoretical approach, I gain a heuristic for the empirical study, in which I examine selected self-help books on the one hand and their reception in online reviews and internet forums on the other. The focus of the empirical analysis is on the relationship between the narrative patterns in the guidebooks and the narratives of corresponding online contributions.
