On the 24th and 25th of November 2022, the international conference "Mapping Asia" will be dedicated to cartographic knowledge and the multitude of cartographic practices that construct or contest concepts of territoriality. Submissions are invited to focus on the period from the 18th to the 20th century. Combining the joint discussion with a visit to the renowned Perthes Collection, particular highlights of the collection’s cartographic material on Asia will be presented.
Since May 2021, the KarAfAs project has not only been digitising the holdings of the Perthes Collection concerning Africa and Asia but also researching constructions and concepts of territoriality in its cartographic material. Another important goal of the project is to communicate the collection and its potential to the global scientific community. KarAfAs is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the eHeritage program; implementing partner institutions are the Centre for Transcultural Studies and the Gotha Research Library.
