Advice for the selection of internships
Make a broad pre-selection of internship organisations
It is advisable not to apply to just one internship organisation, but to write to several organisations that are suitable. This way, you don't run the risk of ending up without an internship.
Apply early
To many internship organisations, especially national or international ones, you have to apply at least one year's in advance. Therefore, you should plan early on when you would like to complete your internship.
Express your own expectations about your internship
It is important to think about why exactly you are interested in a position and what expectations you have. This way, the internship organisation can get a better picture of the your and prepare the internship offer as suitable as possible.
Do not insist on an exact time periods and number of hours specified.
Even if the examination regulations clearly state how many hours and weeks the internship must last in order to receive a certain number of credit points, you should not insist on precise numbers of hours and weeks, as these numbers are minimum requirements. Especially in the case of an internship for 3 creidit points, some internship organisations may feel that the required (minimum) attendance time of 80 hours or two weeks is too short. Therefore, you should show a certain willingness to compromise.
Aim for internships related to your field of study
There should be a clear connection between your internship and your field of study. On the one hand, this assures a realistic chance of obtaining an internship position and, on the other hand, it helps you to aquire skills that are complentary to the knowledge acquired at the university.
Select organisations according to your interests, not according to supposed opportunities
In principle, you should not be afraid to apply for an internship that may be more reputable. If the organisation in question offers internships whose requirements are clearly indicated, it is definitely worth a try. Even if acceptance seems unlikely at first glance, don't let yourself be deterred by the allegedly low chances.
