As a nautilus shell … Religious Diversity and Urbanity. An historical journey
Within the context of the Research Centre “Religion and Urbanity: Mutual Formations” I present a project under the title As a nautilus shell… Religious diversity and urbanity, which aims to analyze, both in historical and theoretical perspectives, how religious diversity took place and was embedded in urban life starting at least from the so-called urban renaissance of Western Christianity.
When studying religious diversity in the urban environment one has to wonder how, from the early modern to the modern period, diversity has been managed, both as a positive and problematic asset. Historians should seek how diversity was organized, how many historical models of religious diversity were available, what diversity meant for different religious cultures, as for example in relation to Islam or Christianity. Ultimately, one should stress how religious diversity is remembered, either as a subject of historiographical research or as a space of cultural heritage.
