Lecture Series

The UrbRel research group has so far organised three lecture series for (graduate) students at the university of Erfurt. In the 2020-21 winter term, Elisa Iori and Emiliano Urciuoli brought togehter a broad range of contributions on the interconnections of religion and urbanity in the Mediterranean, Northern European, North American, and Asian cities from the emergence of urbanism to the present. One year later, Susanne Rau with Katalin Szende and Zoe Opacic collected case studies around the question whether the governance and autonomy of medieval cities and the participation of their citizens in managing communal affairs can be regarded a laboratory of democracy or yet another form of the rule of the privileged. The videos of both lecture series are available online. Elisa Iori and Mateusz Fafinski organised an interdisciplinary lecture series on "Global Exchanges: Trade, Knowledge, and Religion" in the 2023 summer term.

The Erfurt Lectures in Late Antiquity (ELLA) take place during the 2023/24 winter term and are organised by Mateusz Fafinski. They take place in the "Weltbeziehungen" research building on the university campus.
