What is sign language?

Sign languages are visual-manual languages that have developed naturally. In addition to hand signals, sign languages consist of facial expressions and body posture. They have an extensive vocabulary and an independent grammar that follows fundamentally different rules than the grammar of spoken languages. Sign languages are just as complex as spoken languages, even if they are structured differently. Sign languages are recognised by linguists as independent, fully-fledged languages.

As a rule, deaf people and people with severe hearing loss use sign language to communicate with each other because, unlike spoken language, sign language enables deaf people to communicate in a relaxed and reliable manner.

DGS regulars' table

Dear All,

We are interested in German Sign Language. This Stammtisch is a motivated group that learns new signs together in a relaxed setting and in which we deal with German and international deaf culture together. Most of us have taken the two DGS language courses at university and now we want to continue learning this visual language together. We are always available for questions on our Instagram account.

Let's learn German sign language together, get to know deaf culture and take an important step towards inclusion.

Best regards from your DGS Stammtisch :)
