Everyone is talking about the idea of a 'defence-oriented democracy' - but what does it mean for the German domestic intelligence service, the Verfassungsschutz? Founded in 1950 to protect the Basic Law, our domestic service is regularly shaken by news about extremists in its own ranks. At the same time, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is currently actively combating right-wing extremism and faces the difficult task of monitoring a party represented in the Bundestag. This panel discussion in cooperation with the professorship for International Politics at the University of Erfurt is dedicated to the tasks and challenges of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the question of democratic control of intelligence services and, last but not least, the field of tension between security and freedom in which intelligence work takes place.
The event is the start of a multi-part series on the work of constitutional protection and intelligence services, which will be continued in 2024.
