Dual study programme for secondary school teaching: Find out more now!

Thuringia broke new ground last year in the fight against the shortage of teachers: For the first time, the University of Erfurt, together with the school authorities in the state, offered a dual study programme for the teaching profession at secondary schools. This year, there are again at least 50 places available – in Mathematics, German, English, Technology – and for the first time, Physical Education. The application round for 2025 will start in a few days.

In the dual study programme, students gain practical experience right from the start and can apply what they learn at university directly in the classroom. They are employed by the school authorities and receive a salary throughout their studies. In addition, the career prospects are excellent and a job in Thuringia is guaranteed.

Prospective students can apply from 1 to 30 April 2025. However, this application is not made at the University of Erfurt, but via the career portal for the Thuringian teaching profession. In the portal, they select one of the training schools in Thuringia with two of the above-mentioned subjects and submit their application. After the application deadline, the responsible school authority will contact you with more information and, if applicable, an invitation to a selection interview. Dual students receive a study contract from the Free State of Thuringia and are bound to the Free State for the duration of their studies and, including the preparatory service (traineeship), for a further five years. Students who have signed a study contract with the education authority can then enrol at the University of Erfurt. In September, students then start with a four-week onboarding internship to familiarise themselves with the respective training school.

Anyone who would like to find out more about the dual study programme for teaching at secondary schools is invited to an information event on 11 March, followed by a campus tour at the University of Erfurt. The event starts at 4 pm in lecture hall 2 of the Centre for Communication and Information (KIZ) on campus and ends at around 5.30 pm. Registration is requested. On Monday, 31 March 2025, the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, together with the school authorities, will once again offer information about the dual teaching degree programme for secondary schools from 5 p.m. – then in a digital event. Registrations can be made informally by emailing info@lehrerinthueringen.de. The link to the event will then be sent to those who have registered in good time. The Open Day at the University of Erfurt on Saturday 26 April will also provide another opportunity to find out more about admission requirements, the application process and career opportunities. Detailed information can also be found on our dual study programme website.
