Research Project
A comparison between two critics of modern philosophy, the German philosopher and author F.H. Jacobi and the Danish theologian and philosopher Sören Kierkegaard. Both Jacobi and Kierkegaard uncover the costs of modern enlightenment philosophy by pointing to its nihilistic consequences and the forgetting of the concrete individual. In different ways they set out to establish an alternative to modern culture without moving behind it in some nostalgic longing for times past. Kierkegaard and Jacobi show that living in a modern world can mean something else than surrendering oneself to the imperatives of a totally instrumentalized rationality.
