‘Transformation’ - this is a motto of the twenties of the 21st century. It requires thoughtful accompaniment. This is what a theological ethic is attempting here, which manages without an inaccessible superstructure and is orientated towards human dignity.
The democratic and human rights option of ‘Western’ societies is being jeopardised by nationalism and imperialism from both outside and inside. Individual self-determination, to which many refer, is being undermined because it is simultaneously controlled by social media or by self-identification with a group. The social and ecological challenges are growing, but the necessary reorientations and self-restrictions are being rejected.
Church reform is an inescapable legal and moral demand. The theological conditions for such a reform have long been established - now there should be a turnaround and a new beginning here too. What turnaround does the orientation towards the preservation and renewal of the ‘world’ as our earth demand? Will the technical transformation of our economy, administration and education, which is receiving a new boost from artificial intelligence, be compatible with the necessary educational formats? Living, loving and suffering - these encounters constantly demand new answers in the face of the growing difficulties and care deficits that accompany our accelerated transformations.
