We need a new relationship to nature. But humans always already also desire a sense of connection with the cosmos. That is a human constant, the conceptions of which change. The term may be nature instead of cosmos, or wilderness. Charles Taylor lets his inquiry begin with the Romantic poets because they found new ways of expressing their search for a sense of connection, after previous ideas of this connections had lost their viability. Because humans are “language animals” the focus is on language and poetry. The book is a search for connections, which are not reduced to objectifying and instrumentalizing standpoints and which are sustainable for us today.
