Workshop on the careers of scholars around 1700

Here, the focus is particularly on the question of how and whether such a change of role was reflected and, if so, symbolically and communicatively represented. While some saw scholarly employment as a liberation from courtly constraints, for others scholarship presented itself as a last possible resort instead of a career in politics and at court.

At the event, scholars will discuss ongoing research and exchange views on knowledge-economic and praxeological approaches in the history of knowledge in the early modern period. Common to all lectures is the tense relationship between the scholar and the court.

The workshop is part of the project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2020 to 2022 to make accessible the life testimonies of the scholar and statesman Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff (1626-1692).
