New blog post of the Gotha Research Library: Thuringia’s First State School. The Gotha Gymnasium and its Structural Change in the Seventeenth Century

2024 marks the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Latin school in Gotha, which quickly gained importance in the Central German educational landscape. On the occasion of this commemoration, the Gotha Research Library and Research Center at the University of Erfurt are organizing the conference “Between School, University and Private Education: The Gotha Gymnasium Illustre in the Context of Early Modern Cultures of Scholarly Knowledge” on October 10–11, 2024. What makes the Gotha Gymnasium a particularly suitable starting point for the chosen topic? To what extent did its curriculum overlap with that of schools and universities and with the offerings on the private education market? How can the gymnasium be classified in terms of the plurality and flexibility of learning opportunities before the far-reaching regulation of the education system by the state in the nineteenth century?
